A man claiming to be Paresh Barua, commander-in-chief of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom, on Friday offered to hold talks with the government, but made it clear that he will not compromise on the issue of sovereignty of Assam.
"Sovereignty is the core issue for us and we are willing to sit for dialogue anywhere if this is discussed," NDTV 24X7 quoted Barua as telling the news channel over phone.
The process of dialogue can be initiated by the government and "we are ready to give up our demands on talks being held outside the country and under UN supervision," he said.
Meanwhile, talking to some local dailies last night over phone, Barua claimed responsibility for two of the seven blasts that rocked Assam on Thursday.
He said the outfit was responsible for the blast on the railway tracks in Kokrajhar district on Wednesday night and the Goalpara blast on Thursday in which two Border Security Force personnel and a girl were killed.
"We are not involved in the blast on a bus near Gossaigaon and this was a conspiracy by the Unified Command to create a wedge between the Assamese and Bodo communities," he said.
Referring to the explosion in a cinema hall in Dibrugarh, Barua said the ULFA had issued a boycott call against Hindi films "which is like cancer destroying Assamese culture and though we are not involved in it, it must have been carried out by people sympathetic to our cause."
