The Indian Army has been called out in several places in northern and western India to deal with the situation arising out of widespread rains, an army spokesman said today.

Two thousand two hundred soldiers have been deployed in Ambala, 1,200 in Patiala and 400 in Panchkula near Chandigarh, the spokesman said.

In Surat's Valsad area in Gujarat, 400 troops have been called out while 200 have been deployed in Daman and Diu, he said.

Normal life in northern and western parts of the country has been badly hit due to heavy rains for past few days.
