KVPY Fellowships for school and college students interested in research careers.
The department of science and technology, Government of India, offers attractive fellowships (Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 pm) and contingency grants for students studying basic science, engineering and medicine.
The selection to the programme takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated interest in pursuing research.
The scholarships are open to Indian nationals studying in India.
The selection procedures are different for basic sciences, engineering and medicine. All of them, however, include an interview for final selection.
Eligibility and fellowships
Basic Science: (Up to 120 fellowships)
Stream SA: Students enrolled in XI standard (science subjects) in 2004 and having secured a minimum of 75 per cent aggregate marks in science and mathematics in the standard X board examination.
Stream SB: Students enrolled in the first year science undergraduate programme (BSc / Integrated MSc in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics / Statistics or Biological Science, B Math / B Stat) in 2004 and having secured a minimum of 60 per cent marks in science and mathematics in the standard XII board examinations.
Stream SP: (a new entry point) Students pursuing science and enrolled in XI, XII or BSc (I or II year) can apply for KVPY by completing a research project.
Engineering: (up to 25 fellowships)
Stream EA: Students enrolled in first year BE / BTech / B Arch in 2004 and having a minimum of 60 per cent marks in science and mathematics in the standard XII board examination.
Stream EB: Students enrolled in second year BE / B Tech / B Arch in 2004 and having a first class in the first year exam of BE / B Tech / B Arch.
Medicine: (up to 25 fellowships)
Stream MA: Students enrolled in second year MBBS in 2004 and having a minimum of 75 per cent marks in science subjects in the standard XII board examination. Students should have joined the MBBS programme in 2003 and passed the first Professional Examination (with anatomy, biochemistry and physiology) on or before September 30, 2004.
Selection procedure
Basic Sciences (SA and SB): For streams SA and SB, upto 6,000 candidates will be called for a written aptitude test (multiple choice) based on their performance in the Board examination. The top students in this aptitude test (about 500 candidates) will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
Basic Sciences (SP), engineering (EA, EB) and medicine (MA): The applicant is required to submit a report of a projection chosen and executed by her / him exclusively for this application. This project has to be supervised by a teacher / professional in the relevant field. Based on the project submitted and scrutiny of the application form, short-listed candidates will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure.
Application forms
Each stream has a different application form. Separate requisitions must be made by students who wish to apply for more than one stream.
The last date for the receipt of requisitions for the application form by post is September 15 and in person at IISc is September 30.
Each requisition must clearly indicate the stream applied for (SA, SB, SP, EA, EB, MA) and must be accompanied by a DD for Rs 75 drawn in favour of SID a/c KVPY, payable at Bangalore and two self-addressed labels (2" x 4" size) as per the sample below.
