An indefinite curfew was imposed in parts of Hardwar after one person was killed and over 100 injured in clashes between traders and police personnel on Wednesday.
The violence started after a policeman allegedly misbehaved with a trader's wife on Tuesday night, official sources said.
"The situation is tense and efforts are being made to bring it under control," Deputy Inspector General (Crime) Anil Raturi said.
The injured people, including some journalists, were being shifted to hospitals, the sources added.
Meanwhile, the district administration accepted the traders' demand to remove the 'Mela Police', a unit specially deputed for the ongoing 'Ardh Kumbh Mela' in Hardwar, the sources said.
