Despite a spate of violent incidents in parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the past few days, police on Wednesday reeled out statistics to substantiate their claim that situation in the valley is improving.

"It is wrong to say that militancy is on the rise," Director General of Police Gopal Sharma told reporters in Srinagar.

Security forces have launched an offensive and it would continue till militants operating in the valley were eliminated, he said. Ninety militants, including top commanders of some outfits, were killed during the first fortnight of September as against 62 last year.

Sharma said as many as 555 militants have been killed so far this year whereas 922 ultras had been eliminated all of last year. As against 202 militancy-related incidents witnessed in the first fortnight of September this year, 210 had taken place during the corresponding period last year.

In the same period, militants killed 51 civilians this year as against 72 last year, he said adding 30 security personnel had lost their lives this year as against 36 in the corresponding period last year.
