A day after its workers burned Christian literature in Dehradun, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday said there is "no role" for other religions in Uttaranchal, which is dominated by Hindus and Buddhists.
"The tendencies of some religions to pollute our culture cannot be tolerated in Uttaranchal," BJP state unit president Manohar Kant Dhyani said in Dehradun.
The literature that was burned was being distributed in some schools in Ranipokhri and Doiwala area near Dehradun.
The BJP is not against any particular community, but it is trying to preserve the cultural identity of Uttaranchal, he said.
The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, meanwhile, accused the BJP of fomenting communalism in the state.
