A senior Border Security Force commandant, injured in a militant attack on the residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in Srinagar on Friday morning, returned to the spot to lead the operation after first-aid.

BSF sources said officiating commandant of the 43th battalion Pramod Kumar Yadav suffered a bullet injury in his hand.

"Yadav has since returned to the scene after first-aid and is leading his troops," a senior officer said.

Militants attacked the CM's residence on the busy Maulana Azad Road around 0945 IST. They hurled grenades and opened heavy fire from automatic weapons from a building across the road from the house.

The militants later shifted to an adjacent shopping complex.

A senior Border Security Force officer said Sayeed had left his residence before the attack.

The shopping complex has been surrounded and fierce firing is on to flush the militants out.

When reports last came in, the security forces had secured the first floor of the multi-storied complex.
