Eleven persons of Indian origin figure in the list of the 100 most cited scientists in their respective disciplines, ranging from chemistry to physics, and economics to biology, according to Thomson ISI, the pioneers of citation indexing.
The top researchers named in this list are seen as potential Nobel Prize winners in 2003 or after.
Four persons of Indian origin figure in the list the 100 most-cited scientists in economics and business. One of these 100 will finally go on to win the coveted Nobel Prize.
Ranjay Gulati of the Kellogg School of Management with 15 papers and 722 citations is ranked 9th, Raghuram G Rajan, IMF chief economist designate with 20 papers and 552 citations is 28th, Sumanta Ghoshal of Harvard Business School with 27 papers and 508 citations is 41st and Atul K Kohli of Princeton University with 12 papers and 393 citations is 93rd on the list.
Among the 149 top-performing countries in all disciplines taken into account by the Nobel Foundation, http://www.in-cites.com/countries/india.html India ranks number 13 for citations, number 21 for papers, and number 119 for citations per paper.
Three persons of Indian origin are among the 100 most-cited scientists in biology and biochemistry.
Vishva M Dixit of University of Michigan with 68 papers and 8,221 citations is 24th, Sanjay Kumar of John Hopkins University with 219 papers and 6,984 citations is 36th and Ajit Varki of University of California with 72 papers and 4,931 citations is 72nd on the list.
Abul K Abbas is 31st on the list of 100 most-cited scientists in immunology with 37 papers and 5,175 citations.
Vishva M Dixit with 20 papers and 6,688 citations is also on the list of 100 most-cited scientists in molecular biology & genetics at number 61.
Pramod R Saxena of Erasmus University Rotterdam is 16th in the list of 100 most-cited scientists in pharmacology & toxicology with 75 papers and 2,712 citations.
Atul Gurtu of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, with 203 papers and 8,539 citations is 24th on the list of 100 most-cited scientists in physics. P M Patel is at number 84, with 272 papers and 6,286 citations.
