Jindal led the field from the start, never once allowing the competition to come within sniffing distance.

Though he enjoys the full support of incumbent Republican Governor Mike Foster, political pundits are confounded by the Republican candidate's unexpected success in a deeply conservative state with a crucial 30 per cent black electorate that traditionally votes Democrat.

Jindal will face Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Blanco on November 15 to decide who will succeed Foster.
