A sessions court on Monday granted bail to dismissed Central Industrial Security Force jawan Rajnarayan Namdeo, who had shot dead his senior and taken hostage six others for several hours at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji airport nearly five months ago.
Sessions judge N D Deshpande asked the accused to pay Rs 5,000 in addition to a personal bond of Rs 5,000 to be submitted by his father, Lalata Prasad Namdeo. The court also asked his mother, Uma Devi, to furnish a personal bond of Rs 500.
The judge also directed Rajnarayan not to leave Mumbai and attend the court whenever required.
He turned down CISF counsel Arun Gupte's plea for a stay on the bail.
The prosecution has decided to approach the Bombay high court to oppose the bail.
Rajnarayan is charged with gunning down Deputy Commandant A Karanjekar on May 24 and holding six others hostage before surrendering to police.
On August 22, the police charged him under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code.
Rajnarayan was dismissed from service soon after he was arrested.
After the bail was granted, Uma Devi told the media: "I don't want to talk because I had enough of bad publicity.
"I beg you all, please leave us alone."
His father, however, intervened to say that his family had gone through hell ever since the incident.
"His coming out on bail is the best news I have heard after a long time," he told rediff.com
"Everyone shunted us after the firing incident. I, too, work for the CISF and was given a punishment posting to Bhopal because of my son's actions. Thankfully, later they withdrew their transfer order. I am happy and thankful to god that the judge has given bail to my son," he said.
He said his family was also asked to vacate their official accommodation. "They discarded that order too. The neighbours stopped talking to my family. My superiors used to harass me regularly during my job," he added.
He said his daughter, who is disabled, would be glad to see Rajnarayan back. "He cares for her."
Rajnarayan's counsel Majeed Memon said, "The prosecution had charged that this was a case of cold-blooded murder, but we told the court that the accused was exploited and he represented all the exploited constables working in CISF. He was not given leave by his senior and therefore he used to be depressed all the time."
Uma Devi told the judge that her son often used to complain about his job.
"I told him that I would come and talk to Karanjekar... but Namdeo stopped me. He told me that he (Karanjekar) would insult me..." she said.
