Former Mumbai police commissioner Ranjit Singh Sharma, under a cloud over his role in the fake stamp paper racket, was on Monday appointed as chief security officer of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation.

He was due for a promotion but even that has been denied. He is to retire on November 30.

He was removed from the police commissioner's post on November 18 after a Special Investigating Team report pointed out the lapses on his part in the investigation into the fake stamp paper racket and posted as Additional Director General of Police (Administration) in the state police headquarters.

The latest transfer was part of a reshuffle in the higher echelons of the state police in which Additional DGP (Law &Order) Kamal Kishore Kashyap, an IPS officer of 1969 batch, was promoted as DGP and asked to take charge of the Home Guards and Civil Defence Directorate, sources said.

ADGP (Anti Corruption Bureau) Rahul Gopal will take Kashyap's place as ADGP (Law & Order) while ADGP (Establishment) Dhananjay Jadhav will be new ADGP (Administration). Principal Secretary (Home) J D Virkar will replace Jadhav.

State home department sources said the prime reason for moving Sharma out of the post of ADGP (Administration) is that he is on leave and is unlikely to resume duty with his retirement due on November 30.

Meanwhile, state home department sources said the government is likely to issue a fresh promotion list for officers of the rank of Special IGPS.
