Pakistan has nominated career diplomat Aziz Ahmed Khan, currently the foreign office spokesman, as its new high commissioner to India.

Aziz's name has been forwarded to Indian external affairs ministry on Monday for formal approval, foreign office officials said in Islamabad on Tuesday.

An official announcement would be made after clearance of Aziz's name by India, they said.

Known for his 'moderate' views on critical issues of Pakistan's foreign policy, Khan is not new to India, as he had once worked as a senior diplomat at the Pakistan high commission in New Delhi.

Earlier, Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali had named Pakistan ambassador to China, Riaz Muhammad Khan as the high commissioner to India.

The foreign office, however, issued a statement later saying that decision on Riaz Khan was not final.
