Heavily armed militants on Saturday attacked a Special Operation Group post in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir injuring a policeman.
The militants fired rifle grenades and opened heavy fire on the post in the Rolka area around 0010 IST, official sources said.
The security personnel retaliated and the exchange of fire lasted for about six hours, they said.
The militants later fled from the area.
Sources said the militants wanted to carry out an attack similar to that on a police post at Ind in April in which 11 policemen were killed.
A massive search operation has been launched in the forest belt to track down the militants, they said.
