An Indian doctor has been confirmed positive for SARS at Manipal in southwest Karnataka.

Dr Ranjan Pai, who is the executive vice president of the Manipal Education and Medical Group and head of the Malaysia based Melaka-Manipal Medical College, has been admitted to the Kasturba Medical College on Wednesday, state health authorities told rediff.com in Bangalore.

According to senior health official C K Kumaraswamy, this was the first confirmed case of SARS in Karnataka. "The victim developed fever on his return from Kuala Lumpur on April 26," he said. His blood sample was sent for tests, and results confirmed that he was affected by SARS, he added.

He has been quarantined and his condition is reported to be stable.
