The Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to drop two cases registered under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act against sitting independent MLA from Ulhasnagar, Pappu Kalani.
He would, however, face trial under the Indian Penal Code in these cases.
Kalani was booked under TADA in eight cases, including two of murder. He spent nine years in jail and won elections twice while still incarcerated. He was released on bail on September 4, 2001.
The Supreme Court had earlier discharged him from TADA provisions in six cases, including the infamous JJ Hospital shoot-out case.
Kalani has won the Ulhasnagar assembly thrice in a row.
His Ulhasnagar People's Party recently merged with Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party.
