A prominent US lawmaker has expressed disappointment over Pakistan's failure to take full advantage of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's peace initiative.
Congressman Joseph Crowley interacted with Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf when the latter was received during a 'members only' meeting of the House International Relations Committee.
Crowley asked General Musharraf about the volatile situation in Kashmir. "Prime Minister Vajpayee of India has launched an important initiative recently in proposing a new peace initiative to reduce tensions between your two countries," Crowley told Musharraf.
"I am concerned that Pakistan has not taken full advantage of the opportunity presented by this initiative," he added.
Crowley asked Musharraf to inform him of his position on this peace initiative.
"I am particularly concerned that some within Pakistan are not assisting fully in the effort to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. I asked General Musharraf if he could assure the United States that his government has put an end to any relationship in assisting North Korea or of other countries seeking to develop weapons of mass destruction," Crowley also told Musharraf.
