The Rashtriya Lok Dal on Sunday said the Uttar Pradesh governor should ask the Mayawati government to prove its majority on the floor of the House following withdrawal of support by the party.

Chief Minister Mayawati enjoys a simple majority in the state assembly.

Addressing a press conference in Delhi, RLD chief Ajit Singh said his party would ask the President to appoint an observer in the likelihood of Mayawati seeking a confidence vote.

"The governor should do his constitutional duty and ask the government to prove its majority in the assembly now that the RLD has withdrawn support to the coalition government," Singh said.

On moves to topple the Mayawati government, he said the unity of the opposition in this regard is a positive sign.

Singh said the Mayawati government has 'terrorised' the people of the state and the opposition parties.

"It is very unfortunate that such personal vindictiveness is taking place," he said.

Alleging misappropriation of funds by Mayawati and her colleagues, he said this was responsible for the pathetic state of affairs in the sugar industry in the state.
