The Jammu and Kashmir police have arrested two of their colleagues allegedly for helping militants in attacks on security forces, including a suicide attack in Kupwara on June 3, a top police official said in Srinagar on Sunday.

Station House Officer at Sogam police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Ghulam Rasool Wani and Abdul Ahad, a munshi (clerk), were arrested two days ago for their involvement in the attack on the Lalpora police  station on June 3, Superintendent of Police (Kupwara) S D S Jamwal told PTI.

During interrogation, Wani and Ahad confessed to their involvement in the attack on the Lalpora police station and the attack on Central Reserve Police Force personnel recently in which two jawans were killed and four injured, Jamwal said adding that they might be involved in more cases.

Jamwal said the duo had accompanied a militant to the police station a few days before the attack to familiarise him with the area and also facilitated his movement past security personnel frisking people.

He said the suicide attack was foiled by alert police personnel who even managed to snatch a rifle from the militants, but the latter managed to escape by merging into the crowd.

Jamwal said one of the militants was arrested in the Kupwara market two days ago and this led to the arrest of the two cops.

The cops would be charged with murder, attempt to murder, waging war against the country and harbouring militants under the Arms Act.

The duo face death if convicted, Jamwal said adding there was enough evidence to convict the two on all counts.
