Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday renewed his demand for a high level probe into what he termed as "the blatant misuse of official machinery in collection of funds for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minkster Mayawati's 47th birthday on January 15".

Flaying Mayawati for violating all norms and ethics in public life, he told reporters, "Earlier I had demanded an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation. But if Mayawati is scared of them, then the least that can be done is have a parliamentary committee to look into the charges I have leveled, in support of which I have sufficient proof."

Referring to the multi-crore extravaganza to mark the celebrations, put up at state expense in Lucknow and in Delhi, he said, "While the state government could not provide even a temporary shelter or bonfire to protect people from the current cold spell, the state exchequer was being drained for the chief minister's birthday bash."

He wondered, "Why had the prime minister and the deputy prime minister chosen to remain mute spectators to the unabated blatant corruption in her regime as well as to the murder of democracy through systematic throttling of the legislature, executive and the media."
