Militants late on Monday evening gunned down a wine shop owner at Solina in uptown Srinagar.

Police said Abdul Hamid Sheikh, who owned a shop near Allochi Bagh in the state capital, was returning home when militants opened fire on him from close range.

The police rushed sheikh to hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

This is the first time militants have targeted a wine dealer in the capital. Sheikh was running his business in the high-security Allochi Bagh area despite militant threats.

The extremist Lashkar-e-Tayiba had recently warned alcohol sellers in south Kashmir to close down their 'un-Islamic' business.

Posters, which were later removed by the police, were seen pasted at many places in Kulgam in Anantnag district, warning the dealers of 'serious consequences'.
