The Rajasthan government is considering a ban on distribution of trishuls [tridents] to Bajrang Dal activists as it could create communal disharmony, Deputy Chief Minister B L Bairwa said on Sunday.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, however, warned against any such move.
"The trishul has been and will be regarded as a part of Hindu religion and symbol of courage and its distribution to activists is part of a self-defence system," a VHP spokesman said.
He said Bajrang Dal activists have been told not to make 'unlawful use' of the tridents.
On Saturday, district units of the VHP and the Bajrang Dal in Bharatpur took out a procession and burnt effigies of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Home Minister G S Shaktawat to protest against the proposal.
