Former deputy superintendent of stamps Babanrao Tukaram Ranjane was on Monday arrested by the Special Investigation Team for allegedly conniving with the syndicate of Abdul Karim Telgi, the prime accused in the fake stamp paper scam.
Ranjane, who retired in February 2002, was posted in Mumbai and is alleged to have forged links with the syndicate run by Telgi.
He was arrested under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act in Mumbai and later taken to Pune where a court remanded him to police custody till December 16.
Seeking his police custody, Chief Public Prosecutor Raja Thakre said the accused had failed to take any action against three firms owned by Telgi despite being aware that they were used to circulate fake stamp papers.
