The war in Iraq has claimed its first casualty of Indian origin -- a soldier serving with the American forces.

Specialist Uday Singh, 21, died Monday of injuries sustained in enemy action.

A Defence Department press release said, "Spc Uday Singh, 21, of Lake Forest, Illinois, was killed on December 1 in Habbaniyah, Iraq. Singh died of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his patrol."

Singh was assigned to C Company, 1st Battalion, 34th Armoured Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division.

"The incident is under investigation," the release added.
