The Union government on Tuesday said it will seek a direction from the Supreme Court as to whether the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam should be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Union Finance Minister Jaswant Singh said since the racket involves several states and several courts have also come into play, it will be only appropriate to let the Supreme Court decide whether a CBI probe encompassing investigations in all affected states should be ordered.
Meanwhile, the SC on Tuesday heard two petitions related to the scam. On a public interest litigation, the court granted two weeks' time to make all the affected states parties in the petition seeking CBI inquiry into the scam.
The court also directed that the second petition, seeking transfer of all Telgi related cases from various high courts to the apex court, be listed along with the PIL.
