A severe cyclonic storm on Tuesday evening left 34 dead in Assam's Dhubri district bordering Bangladesh and about 32 are listed as missing.

District Magistrate PK Barua has sent a report to Dispur, the state's capital, amending the earlier figure of 50 dead.

The number of seriously injured people is now put at 250 while over 1500 suffered minor injuries. The total number of affected people has been put at 10,000.

The storm with over 100km wind speed and accompanied by heavy rains was centered around Kalapani area of Mancachar circle under Dhubri district, just a kilometre away from the border with Bangladesh.

Dhubri's Additional District Magistrate Azad Ali Sheikh said over 5,000 people have been left homeless in the cyclone by the storm, which hit the area between 1830-1900 IST and destroyed all the houses in eight revenue villages.

Rescue and relief operations have been hampered by the total lack of communication to the site of destruction, state government officials said.

The rescue work is being hampered as all bridges leading to Kalapani have been blown away Shiekh said. "All the telephone lines have been blown away. The only means of communication is the police wireless. Even that is working on and off," he said.

Relief agencies like the Lutheran church service, the Red Cross and other non governmental organisastions have been asked to join the rescue and relief operation.

Meanwhile, the storm also rendered nearly 8,037 families homeless parts of West Tripura district including capital Agartala.

Relief measures are being provided to the effected families, the sources said adding that the exact loss of properties and crops has not yet been ascertained.

Six camps of Tripura State Rifles were also damaged at Bramhacherra and two more camps were also damaged at Debendra Sardar Para village at Khowai sub-division of the district.

Several other villages including Durgapur, Ghilatali, Ampura, Baijalbari Bagabil were severely affected in the storm.

Efforts were on to restore power and telecommunication services and the Assam-Agartala National Highway (44) was opened for movement of heavy vehciles after debris were cleared, the sources said.
