At least one person was killed and 14 others were injured when a religious procession in Rajgangpur town in Orissa's Sundargarh district on Friday night turned violent, Inspector General of Police Manmohan Praharaj told reporters on Saturday.
The incident occurred when miscreants pelted stones on the Ram Nabami procession that was passing through the city's market areas, triggering a clash between the processionists and the residents of the area. Bricks were used liberally.
Senior police and local administration officials were among those injured in the clash. They are being treated in the local hospital.
Prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code have been clamped in the town.
