The Maharashtra government on Wednesday bowed to the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine's demand to install a portrait of freedom fighter, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, in the central hall of the state legislature in Mumbai.

The Sena-BJP combine had raised the demand after the Congress and Left parties opposed the installation of Savarkar's portrait in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Sena-BJP members thumped desks as Speaker Arun Gujrathi made the announcement in the lower house.

Savarkar, who was also an illustrious litterateur, enjoys an iconic status in Maharashtra.

After the Sena-BJP raised the demand and then took to streets to press it, the matter was referred to a two-member committee, comprising Gujrathi and chairman of the state council, Prof N S Pharande.

The committee decided to install a portrait of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose too in the central hall.
