Delhi police to move Ambala court
for R K Sharma's custody

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

The Delhi police will move court to try and secure Ravi Kant Sharma's custody at the earliest, Jt Commissioner of Police Umesh Katna, who is handling the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case, told rediff.com on Friday.

A senior IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, Sharma is prime suspect in the murder of Indian Express reporter Shivani Bhatnagar.

On the run since August 3 following the arrest of another suspect in the case on July 30, Sharma surrendered in Ambala before Chief Judicial Magistrate Sarita Gupta on Friday afternoon.

He has been sent to judicial custody till October 10.

Katna said that a Delhi police team would be leaving for Ambala shortly to move court and seek Sharma's custody.

Sharma had applied for bail in several courts, but was unsuccessful.

Sharma's lawyer Mohit Mathur told rediff.com that the decision to surrender was taken two days ago. "The basic aim of surrendering before the court was to ensure that the Delhi police did not get to detain Sharma illegally, like it has done with the other suspects," he said.

Meanwhile, Inspector General (Ambala) Alok Joshi denied allegations that the Haryana police was treating Sharma like a VIP. "He is being treated like any other suspect," he insisted.
