Sri Lanka lifts ban on LTTE

The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday lifted the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, clearing the way for peace talks with the rebels in Thailand, Defence Minister Tilak Marapone said.

Marapone told the cabinet that he used his powers as minister of defence to lift the January 1998 ban.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who had opposed the lifting of the ban, was not present at the meeting, a minister said.

The peace talks are due to open on September 16.
