Salman remanded to 7 days' judicial custody

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Mumbai

A Mumbai court on Monday rejected the bail application of actor Salman Khan and sent him to judicial custody till October 21 in a hit-and-run case.

Magistrate S Y Shisode said, "At this stage, the investigation is going on and I feel that under section 304 (II) the case must be tried by a sessions court and therefore the bail application is rejected."

Earlier, Salman's lawyer Aabad Ponda argued that the lower court had the authority to give bail under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.

"You can impose conditions and grant bail to him," argued Ponda. However, his request was turned down.

Chief Public Prosecutor M R Raut did not press for police custody of Salman, but later told reporters that they would file a charge sheet against him.

Salman was wearing a white pyjama and dark blue T-shirt. He was unshaven and sported a white skullcap.

Brother Arbaaz, sister Alvira and brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri were present in the court.

Salman's lawyers said they would file a bail application at the session court.

The actor was sent to Arthur Road jail.

One person was killed and four injured when the actor allegedly rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into some pavement dwellers in Bandra on September 28.
