Naxals blast railway station, three culverts in AP

In continued attacks, ultras of the outlawed Peoples War blew up a railway station and three culverts and set fire to a state-owned bus in the district on Monday.

According to the police, about five armed naxals reached Pondugula railway station on Nadikudi-Nalgonda section of the South Central Railway at 1100 IST and asked the rail staff to vacate the station.

They then proceeded to detonate five bombs, following which the railway station building collapsed and signalling panels and other equipment got damaged. No one was injured in the blast.

The SCR has diverted three express and passenger trains on the Guntur-Secunderabad section in Khazipet, railway sources said.

In another incident, naxals torched an Andhara Pradesh State Transport Corporation bus at Mukunedu in Durgi mandal in the district.

The ultras asked the passengers to alight and hurled two hand grenades into the bus, one of which exploded, damaging the vehicle.

The ultras also blew up three small culverts in the district, but road traffic was not disrupted.

Meanwhile, the Guntur bandh called by the naxals, to protest the November 12 police encounter, evoked little response, police sources said.
