Russian minister Klebanov arrives on Thursday

Ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit early in December, Minister of Industry and Science and Technology Ilya Klebanov is to undertake a two-day trip to India from Thursday to hold discussions with Indian leaders on cooperation in defence, economic, science and other fields.

The senior Russian minister's visit will help prepare for the summit-level talks between Putin and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit from December three to five.

Klebanov will attend the inter-session review meeting of the Indo-Russian inter-governmental commission for trade, economic, scientific, technological and cultural cooperation, which he will co-chair with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha.

Twelve working groups covering different spheres have been established within the framework of this commission, including in trade and economic cooperation, power and non-conventional sources of energy, petroleum, science and technology, coal, information technology, pharmaceuticals, civil aviation and coal.

The two sides would also review issues related to the inter-governmental commission for military-technical cooperation when the Russian minister calls on Defence Minister George Fernandes.

Klebanov is also likely to call on the prime minister and National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra.
