Five Naxalites, including two women, of the outlawed People's War group, were on Sunday morning killed in an encounter with the police in Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh.
According to a state police spokesman, the incident occurred at around 1030 IST in the forest between Ailapuram and Reddypalli villages in Eturnagaram mandal.
On a tip-off that the PWG was conducting some exercises in the area, a Greyhounds (elite anti-extremist commandos) team was despatched to the spot on Saturday night, he said.
The team came across the Naxalites during combing operations, he said.
The slain Naxalites are yet to be identified. Some weapons have been recovered from the site, the spokesperson said.
Police suspect that several others may have fled from the spot.
