Police obtain another non-bailable warrant against Abu Salem

On a plea made by the Mumbai police, a sessions court on Wednesday issued yet another non-bailable warrant against gangster Abu Salem.

Additional Principal Sessions Judge R R Vachcha issued the warrant. Salem is accused of trying to murder a businessman in 1995. Nine members of his gang have been arrested in this case and are facing trial.

Salem is imprisoned in Lisbon, Portugal, on charges of illegal stay. The Mumbai police is seeking his extradition.

Two courts had on Tuesday issued similar warrants against Salem for his involvement in murder cases.

Special Judge Abhay Thipsay issued a warrant for Salem's involvement in the murder of Ajit Dewani, secretary to film stars Manisha Koirala, Aftab Shivdasani and Lisa Ray. Salem's men had gunned down Dewani last year after he failed to meet their extortion demands. Six of them are facing trial.

In another case, Justice S J Shah issued a warrant against Salem in a case of double murder. The warrants will be handed over to Interpol, which will then present it to the Portugal government.

The CBI has already collected evidence against Salem in the 1993 bomb blast case. He is accused of distributing arms and RDX to the main accused at the insistence of Pakistan-based gangster Dawood Ibrahim. Later, a red corner notice was issued.

The police have also collected information on Salem's alleged involvement in the Gulshan Kumar murder case. Salem had conspired to kill the audio king and arranged a meeting in Dubai where the killers accepted the contract money.
