Translate promises into action: CCS to Pak

The Cabinet Committee on Security met in New Delhi on Thursday night and issued a stern warning to Pakistan to translate its promises to crack down on terrorism into concrete action.

The meeting also took stock of the situation along the border and discussed the suggestions made by the Unified Command coordinating anti-militancy operations in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was attended by Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, Defence Minister George Fernandes, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, Centre's interlocutor on Kashmir K C Pant and the National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.

The meeting began soon after Vajpayee returned to the capital from a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

The CCS meeting was also attended by Army chief General S Padmanabhan, Naval Chief Admiral Madhvendra Singh and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal S Krishnaswamy.

The meeting also dismissed Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's statement that he would not allow his country's soil to be used for terrorism, saying it was merely a repetition of his January 12 assurances, which had not been translated into action.

"The statement is no different from the one issued on January 12 and subsequent clarifications. It is just the same," External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh told reporters after the hour-long meeting.

"We go by examples of conduct. Similar assurances were given earlier also. We wish to see its translation into action," he said.
