"We strongly condemn the heinous attack against France and Pakistan, two of our closest allies in the war on terrorism," state department spokesman Richard Boucher said on Wednesday.
Such attacks could cause enormous harm to Pakistan, Boucher said.
"We have worked very closely with President [Pervez] Musharraf, because he is as interested as anybody in ending this kind of violence in his country and putting Pakistan on a moderate course," he said.
Several Americans had sustained cuts and bruises in the attack, Boucher said.
