AP government promises conducive
atmosphere for talks with PWG

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh government on Wednesday responded positively to the declaration of ceasefire and offer of talks by the outlawed People's War Group.

At a meeting with his ministers and senior officials lasting over three hours, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu discussed PWG's offer of unilateral ceasefire from May 10.

A brief statement from the chief minister's office said that the government had taken note of the PWG offer. "The government is committed to create a conducive atmosphere to facilitate talks. The terms of the talks will be discussed with their [PWG] representatives," the statement added.

The statement, however, did not make it clear whether the government too would announce a ceasefire in response to the PWG's truce offer.

The PWG, while announcing the month-long unilateral ceasefire, had hoped the government would reciprocate in a similar manner.

The PWG has also expressed willingness to send mediators to draw the agenda for the talks.
