US diplomat visits madrassa, WB government in dark

A top diplomat from the American embassy in New Delhi on Friday visited Calcutta Madrassa and held detailed interaction with its authorities, apparently without the knowledge of the West Bengal government.

The diplomat, James Callaghan, Minister-Counsellor of the US embassy, came with a number of officials and held discussions with the teachers on the syllabus being taught, according to Muniruzzaman, principal of madrassa.

Another Muslim educationist, who attended the interaction but did not want to be named, said the Americans also enquired about the madrassa's possible links with the Taliban.

The state government, however, seemed to be unaware of the visit and its purpose, with Minister for Primary and Madrassa Education Kanti Biswas expressing ignorance about it.

"I am not aware of any such visit. I am hearing about it for the first time from you," the minister told Press Trust of India.
