India has said that it will adhere to the 'one China' policy concerning Taiwan, an ultra-sensitive issue for China.
"We recognise 'one-China'. There is no confusion on this matter," External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh said in Beijing on Sunday, allaying China's apprehension on this matter, especially on the eve of Taiwan starting direct passenger flights to India.
"It is only a commercial arrangement," he said, when asked to comment on Taiwan's decision to commence direct flights between Taipei and New Delhi from Monday.
Earlier, commenting on Taiwan's decision to start direct flights to India, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said that Beijing hoped New Delhi would 'properly handle' the issue.
"We have noticed the relevant report. The Chinese side has made clear to the Indian side its consistent position on this question and asked the Indian side to properly handle this question," Zhang said.
China views Taiwan as a rebel province that must be reunified with the mainland.
