Musharraf indulging in 'verbal calisthenics': India

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

India on Monday described Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf's denial that he had not given any assurance on permanently ending cross-border terrorism, as 'occasional verbal calisthenics'.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Nirupama Rao, while responding to questions on Musharraf's interview to Newsweek magazine said, "Pakistan has committed itself to fighting terrorism. This is an unambiguous and clear commitment lending itself to no other interpretations."

Musharraf had denied giving an 'assurance' to US of permanently ending cross-border terrorism and said it was linked to India's response to its demand for 'discussion on Kashmir'.

Asserting that 'nations could not go back on pledges', Rao said, "It has been conveyed to us in categorical terms that commitment about permanently ending infiltration of terrorists across the LoC have repeatedly been given by General Musharraf. Despite some occasional verbal calisthenics by Pakistan, this is the commitment that remains undiluted."
