Congress to file nomination for Kalam

Congress president Sonia Gandhi along with senior party leaders will file nomination papers for National Democratic Alliance candidate A P J Abdul Kalam in the July 15 presidential election.

"Congress will file nomination papers for Kalam and Gandhi will lead the party functionaries," party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said on Monday.

Asked if the party would be filing separate nomination papers, Reddy replied in the affirmative and said 'details are being worked out'.

Congress, which along with Left parties and Samajwadi Party had jointly requested President K R Narayanan to seek a second term as their nominee, later announced its support to Kalam after Narayanan declined to be a candidate.

Kalam, who arrived in New Delhi on Monday morning from Chennai, is expected to file his nomination on Tuesday.

Prominent among those likely to sign nomination papers along with Gandhi are: Manmohan Singh, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel, K Natwar Singh and Shivraj Patil.
