Al Qaeda terrorists may be in
Kashmir: Straw

Going beyond the remarks of United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld about the presence of Al Qaeda terrorists near the Line of Control, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Friday said they had "infiltrated themselves into Kashmir".

In an interview to BBC Radio 4, Straw said: "We certainly think that there are Al Qaeda operating in the northern part of Pakistan, as Secretary Rumsfeld said, operating probably in Kashmir. And certainly elsewhere."

"Since we know that quite a number of Al Qaeda have infiltrated the northern part of Pakistan we have to have a working assumption that some of these have infiltrated themselves into Kashmir," he said.

He also pointed out that in any case "there has been a nexus between terrorists".

Straw said terrorism remained a constant threat. "Yes, we have been remarkably successful in Afghanistan in defeating the political and economic and social hold which the Al Qaeda and the Taliban had over that country and the progress that has been made in the seven months since the fall of Kabul from the Taliban has been quite remarkable..."

"At the same time, it is a fact that not all the people involved in Al Qaeda have been either brought to justice or dealt with by military means," Straw said.
