US offers ground sensors to monitor LoC

Carrying forward US efforts to help defuse Indo-Pak tension, Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday offered to provide advanced ground sensors to monitor infiltration across the Line of Control.

Rounding off a hectic day-long schedule of talks with Indian leaders, Rumsfeld suggested a meeting of surveillance experts from Britain, US, India and Pakistan to work out the modalities for using such sensors, a senior US official said.

The setting up of monitoring mechanism figured prominently in talks Rumsfeld had with his Indian counterpart George Fernandes, Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra, the official said.

He said that the sensors would be ground-based rather than airborne and would be operated by local forces.

Rumsfeld called upon Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee before his departure for Islamabad.

After a 90-minute meeting with Fernandes, Rumsfeld said, "The President of the United States [George Bush] and Secretary of State Colin Powell are, needless to say, deeply interested in the relationship with this country and are anxious to see the tensions that exist between India and Pakistan improve."

He said, "We feel that there are steps being taken which are constructive."
