Anoop Singh, an Indian national and the current Director of Special Operations in the International Monetary Fund, has been designated as the Director of IMF's Western Hemisphere Department, a top IMF official said on Tuesday.
Announcing his intention to name Singh as the successor to current Director Claudio Loser, who is due to retire later this year, IMF Managing Director Horst Kvhler said. Singh will assume the position of Director-designate of the Western Hemisphere Department until Loser's retirement.
Singh has more than 25 years experience at the IMF. Prior to his appointment as Director for Special Operations in February 2002, he was Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department.
He has also held a range of senior positions within IMF, including in the Policy Development, Review Department and the European Department and headed Fund missions to India, Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand.
For the time being, Singh will continue to hold his current position in Special Operations. By the end of the summer, IMF management intends to integrate Special Operations into the Fund's organisational structure, and enhance the IMF's capacity in crisis prevention and management.
