4 village defence committee members gunned down in Udhampur district

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Four village defence committee (VDC) members were gunned down by militants at village Baggad near Mahore in Udhampur district late on Friday night.

The militants came to the village around midnight and forced their entry into the homes of the VDC members, police sources said.

After killing the VDC members and snatching their.303 rifles, the militants escaped under the cover of darkness.

The police was informed about the incident on Saturday morning. They have rushed to the spot and launched a search for the culprits.

No group has yet admitted responsibility for the killings.

The VDCs were formed in Jammu region following a series of attacks on members of the minority community in far flung areas. VDCs comprise members from all communities and they guard the village against militant attacks.

They have been provided .303 rifles and ammunition by the state government.
