University of California suspends study programme in India

Meenakshi Ganjoo in Silicon Valley

The University of California, Berkley, has temporarily suspended its study programme in India because of escalating hostilities between New Delhi and Islamabad.

University officials said the Education Abroad Programme in India, under which students are sent to New Delhi and Hyderabad, has been suspended in view of the military build-up and the threat of war in the subcontinent.

The decision was made in consultation with the US state department.

The programme may be reinstated if "the security and safety situation" in India and Pakistan improves, the San Jose Mercury News quoted UC spokesman Hanan Eisenman as saying.

"We will be monitoring it and following the state department advisories. For now, we thought putting the programme on hold seemed the safest thing to do," Eisenman said.

As many as 15 students were scheduled to travel to India this summer for study.
