Five Naxalites, including two key members of the outlawed People's War group of the Communist Party of India, Marxist-Leninist, were killed in an encounter with the police in Warangal district on Friday afternoon.
State police spokesman Shujath Ali told rediff.com that the encounter took place at Damera village in Mulkanoor block on the Warangal-Karimnagar border at around 1415 IST.
A police party out on a combing operation noticed the Naxalites near the village. When called on to surrender, the Naxalites opened fire. The policemen returned the fire. The exchange continued for half an hour.
Among the Naxalites killed were Warangal PW district committee member Srinivas alias Sreenu, area committee secretary Naveen, and dalam (armed squad) commander Jyotakka. The police recovered one self-loading rifle, a .303 rifle, a carbine, a revolver and another weapon from the scene of encounter.
This was the first encounter after the talks between the PW faction and the state government broke down on July 19. A PW landmine in Guntur district had killed four commandos of the elite Greyhound anti-extremist force of the state police.
