In a muted response to the Agni missile test, China said on Saturday that every country should do things that would maintain stability and peace in South Asia.
"We hope that every country would do more things which are beneficial to and which would maintain the peace and stability of the South Asia region," foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan told the Press Trust of India.
Official sources said India had informed China in advance of the test, which came a week after Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji's visit to the country.
Analysts attached much significance to China's low-key response, saying it showed better understanding by Beijing of India's concerns.
