India can help bring peace, stability in Afghanistan: Karzai

Afghanistan's interim leader Hamid Karzai on Wednesday said he looked forward to India and other neighbouring countries contributing towards enabling his people to have a responsible government there.

"India and all other neighbours can contribute towards stability and peace in Afghanistan so that the people of the country are able to get a responsible government," he told reporters after the ceremonial welcome on the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.

Karzai who arrived in Delhi on Tuesday on a two-day state visit to have his first political contact with the Indian leadership was received by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Union Home Minister L K Advani, External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and their cabinet colleagues.

Karzai, who is accompanied by a 36-member strong delegation, including Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, said India, which has a major industrial base, could provide Afghanistan with industrial and technological assistance.
