US pleased with Omar's arrest

The United States on Tuesday said it was "very pleased" with the arrest of Sheikh Omar, the prime suspect in the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl.

The US is "very pleased to learn that Sheikh Omar, the main suspect in the incident, has been arrested", a senior administration official said.

"We are still making every effort possible to find and secure his (Pearl's) release," he added.

The British-born Omar was arrested in Lahore and handed over to police in the Sindh province.

Omar, one of the top leaders of the banned terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed, emerged as the main suspect in the incident after the arrest of three persons.

He was one of the three terrorists released by India to secure the freedom of passengers of the hijacked Indian Airlines plane in 1999.
